Digital data only

Data submitted to the data bank must be in digital form. A variety of data types and formats are acceptable. Proponents with analog data will have to ensure that the data is scanned at high resolution (at least 300 dpi lossless TIFF) prior to submission to the SSDB.

Each digital file uploaded to the SSDB needs to be described with supporting information (metadata) so that it can be discovered by searching, plotted on a map, or interpreted. A web form will assist the proponent in the entry of metadata. For each object (data file) that you wish to upload, a corresponding metadata file will be created.

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) will be required for every file sent to the SSDB because each piece of data needs to be available for georeferencing.

Analog Data Policy

Analog data (e.g., paper records, photos, microfilm, etc.) submitted to the old SSDB now reside at the SSDB at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. As a guide to this analog data we provide an Excel spread sheet listing all documents in the old SSDB database. Proponents or others wishing to use analog data stored at the new SSDB should review the IODP-MI Analog Data Policy regarding costs and procedures. Any questions about this spreadsheet, or its contents, should be directed to science@iodp-mi-sapporo.org.
